We are Hayley, Rob and Elliot.

Together we run Lakeland Rings - our small family business based in Grange over Sands at the southernmost tip of the Lake District. To be clear, as he's only 10 at the time of writing, Elliot won't be making your rings! But he's our apprentice and he keeps us in check, so his contribution needs to be acknowledged. 

 

We've lived in Cumbria for 10 years, though we've been coming to the Lake District long before that, and like so many others we fell in love with it. We've been inspired by the incredible landscape and natural materials of the place we live to create a collection of unique and beautiful handcrafted rings. 

 

When we got married in 2010 we said we would love to run a business together. It's taken a long time and a few random life choices for us to finally find our thing, but we're finally there and we love it.

Rob is an engineer by trade, with a background ranging from reprographics to marine engineering. An obsession with blacksmithing videos and watching Forged in Fire on repeat eventually led Rob to the scrapyard on a mission to build a forge, then immediately attempting to craft a Damascus steel knife - it obviously did not go well. It turns out that the people on these shows have got some serious skill and experience, not to mention expensive equipment! Blacksmithing turned out to be a bit too noisy for the area we live, so the obsession quickly shifted to jewellery making. Firstly with copper, then silver, then gold. After a few workshop upgrades Rob started working with platinum (that was a scary step) and eventually Damascus steel, but on the lathe this time. Rob designs and makes everything by hand in our home workshop.

Hayley's background is forensics, which makes her a natural fit for her quality control role. Hayley checks and photographs everything Rob makes before it's sent out, and if there's even the slightest defect it's handed back and put right. Hayley also worked for local government, which makes the administrative burden of actually running a viable business a little easier. When it became obvious that the jewellery making obsession was here to stay, Hayley took the plunge and made rings her full time job. She handles sizing, customer enquiries, the website, social media, finances and essentially everything else that isn't making rings. 

 

Who knows what path Elliot will take! For now he's enjoying working his way through our apprentice chart, along with playing Minecraft and ticking off the Wainwrights with dad.

So that's us. We're real people who put love and care into everything we make and do. We don't just pack your rings personally after receiving them from a supplier - we design and make them ourselves, in our workshop, from scratch.
